Hong Jin Kyung’s “Broadcast Mishap” at 2024 MAMA: Her Lack Of Preparation Or Staff’s Carelessness
MAMA Japan, held at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan, was live-streamed via Mnet on November 22. Hong Jin Kyung took the stage as an award presenter, beginning her speech with a calm tone:
“I didn’t realize the atmosphere at MAMA was this electrifying. The energy here is amazing. Being here makes me think, ‘Wow, what is this place?’”
While delivering her remarks smoothly at first, Hong appeared momentarily flustered. Her tone became awkward as she shared her impressions of the event, then abruptly asked, “Can you enlarge the prompter text size?”
Even after her initial request, she seemed to struggle with the small text on the monitor, repeating, “Could you please enlarge the prompter text a bit more?” As the tension rose, the camera shifted to the audience, capturing artists and eliciting applause to diffuse the atmosphere.
Hong continued with her hosting duties, signaling with her fingers to emphasize her request for larger text. Despite the hiccup, she successfully announced Tomorrow X Together (TXT) as the winners of the Fan’s Choice award, avoiding a major on-air incident.
Online communities and social media platforms quickly picked up on the incident, with keywords like “Hong Jin Kyung prompter mishap” and “Hong Jin Kyung vision issues” trending.
Critics argued that Hong’s dependence on the prompter showed a lack of preparation, while others defended her, highlighting that the MAMA Awards production team should have anticipated potential difficulties because of her age and adjusted the prompter size for better visibility.
The 2024 MAMA Awards will continue with Chapter 2 at the same venue in Osaka on November 23, featuring a red carpet event at 1 PM and the awards ceremony beginning at 3 PM.
